To stay on top of today’s increasingly regulated and competitive marketplace of architectural lighting design, you must focus on service beyond customer service. This may sound like an odd thing to say if you are a contractor who takes pride in exceeding client expectations and relies on customer service to win bids. Hear us out for a moment and consider this point of view as well: your service alone to the client will end when the system is finished, and the client will probably hope that you will not have to return with a labor invoice for additional service fees for maintenance and replacements. The type of service they are looking for comes not so much from you (although courtesy and professionalism are always a given in business), but rather equipment and solutions that serve them every evening when the doors close and the lights come on.

A system developed along these principles of architectural lighting design is something of an intuitive beast that anticipates expectations on two levels. On one level, it reliably performs without mishap on a consistent basis in accordance with how it is intended to perform. On an entirely different level, superior architectural lighting design anticipates increasingly strict government regulations that increasingly mandate more green technology both in terms of power costs and material builds associated with equipment manufacture.

To be a leader in architectural lighting design, you have to think ahead, and you have to install equipment that in spite of its lack of “thinking” ability, behaves as though it can think and satisfies both the client and surrounding community with performance above and beyond what is generally expected.

To create this level of excellence, you must take either take extraordinary measures to design an architectural lighting system or work with an exceptional vendor who can offer you some unique and very proprietary support services. Architectural lighting design on the scale that we are talking about requires investing in very expensive software that many smaller companies and freelance contractors simply cannot afford, but desperately require nonetheless to develop site lighting and exterior lighting proposals that simultaneously speak to cost consciousness, governing authorities, employee morale, branding and advertising, and power conservation. Without tools such as this to work out all the math and angles of incidence necessary to determine wattage, voltage, foot candle densities, required LPW, and CRI index, finding the right industrial lighting fixtures for the system at a price your clients can afford and still make you a profit can be like searching for a needle in a haystack in today’s online marketplace of foreign manufactured goods, inflated promises, and endless discount offers on shortcut engineering that costs more money in the long run that it saves in the short term.

Consider instead the benefits of working with a vendor like us who has already spent the money on architectural lighting design software so you won’t have to, and who will offer its full functionality to any client at no additional costs to the price of the equipment you buy. If you are a small, privately owned business, you can now compete with large architectural firms and lighting designer powerhouses that previously outcompeted because they had access to resources you lacked. If you are a larger company considering purchasing a suite of programs that will then requiring expanding your staff in a time of cutbacks and recession, don’t. Let our staff assist you with the process of turning conceptual, intuitive architectural lighting design into a scientific, mathematically sound schematic of the actual hardware to be used and the recommended positions of every fixture and lamp in the system.

Not only will such a partnership save you time by streamlining the proposal development process, but it will also make your line items more precisely targeted toward the long term objectives of energy code compliance, reduced maintenance and replacement costs, light pollution control, and optimal aesthetic compliments that any client can justifiably and reasonably expect from their investment in architectural lights. When all of these variables are correctly factored into the lighting design equation, the outcome promises reliable service, a compliment to operations and aesthetics, and multiple sources of ROI ranging from savings on power bills to an increase in business resulting from a safer work environment and a more attractive face to the business world.

Having the right lighting these days is an important part of our lifestyle and we as a civilized people have come a long way from having a single light mounted on out ceiling in the center of the room. Lighting which is smartly located can put people into different moods based on the location and the type of lights. They can even emphasize a particular wall painting or particular piece of art.

Desk lighting enables you to make almost all of the above mentioned special effects. This type of lamp is usually relatively small which means they are often situated almost anyplace in your home. A clamp on desk lamp may also be the most straightforward to set up merely requiring one to plug these in to the closest electric socket, after which shift them towards the preferred place that you need the lighting.

Present types of light fixtures have graduated from the outdated desk table lamps that people may all try to remember to a modern type of desk lamp that you will clamp on to the desk. The outdated on and off toggle switch has also been eliminated. These days, desk lighting is usually contact sensitive or even sound receptive. They support LED lights, dimmer switches, halogen light bulbs, as well as fluorescent tubes. These functions which help to make desk lights extremely easy for kids and well suited for their own bedrooms.

Clamp On Desk Lamp – is actually small in dimensions, clips anyplace, and also has a gooseneck which enables the bulb to be aimed wherever necessary. A clip on lamp, along with gooseneck, is excellent to read by or even situated over a activity or study table.

Clip On Bed Lamp – This provides a long lasting, formidable clip that holds up as the light is getting fine-tuned into the right position. These types of lights put additional illumination exactly wherever it’s necessary in a moments notice and a good flexible clip or gooseneck stand will be fast to secure in every positions. A clip on lamp can be compact in measurements, demands very little area, frequently built in metal, steel, or long lasting plastic materials, along with a range of different color or shades of black to provide a nice look, and offers the best quantity of illumination for the bed headboard or wardrobe room.

Mini Clip-On Lights – These provide immediate illumination within any position with a cost-effective price tag. They come in a resilient plastic designs, completely adjusts, as well as will take any 25w light bulb.

Battery Operated Clip On Lamps – With electric batteries as the power source, take it one step further simply by providing total independence in the actual placement, with no need to be based close to an electrical socket.

Regardless of whether it’s a clamp on desk lamp, headboard lamp, or studying lamp, a clip-on light provides an immediate lighting source intended for a number of scenarios. A lamp that’s ideal to place over a tiny work area or workspace wherever space can often be confined.

This article develops a unique, extensive home lighting design Daylighting Design Schedule to address code and a whole lot more. Home lighting design policy for most any home these days: let the daylight in with qualifications – maybe not too much, not too little, depends on where, depends on how, how about when, depends what it’s shining on, etc. This is about a Daylighting Design Schedule.

Home lighting design code: IRC 303.1 presents effectively and round-about that for daylighting design, at least in a sleeping room, “aggregate glazing area” should be not less than 8% of that room’s floor surface area. (CABO’s tougher, fewer exceptions.) [Please note that this presentation has no direct connection with emergency egress.]

Home daylighting design practice? Who knows. The author has had reactions from “exactly, right” to “not so important around here” to “what are you talking about” from building authorities having jurisdiction. If considered at all by others, it’d be for sleeping areas only is my expectation.

AGGREGATE GLAZING AREA

To start, the term aggregate glazing area – otherwise undefined – is interpreted to mean translucent surface – glass, clear plastic, etc. and not associated frame, sash, muntins, trim, and the like. What Marvin Windows and Doors defines as “Lite”, Pella as “Visible Glass”, Loewen as “Exposed Glass Area,” etc.

Note, please, that if some folks weren’t interested in these surface areas, the big players in windows wouldn’t work it out in print. This custom home designer’s interested.

THE HOME DAYLIGHTING SCHEDULE FOR DAYLIGHTING DESIGN

A home lighting Daylighting Schedule, or Illumination Schedule, achieves four ends.

First, it defines the proportion of aggregate glazing area to interior surface area in each major space of a residence, including habitable rooms, halls, walk-in closets, utility spaces for workshop and laundry and such, garage(s), etc.

Second, it compares actual aggregate glazing area to calculated code target for each major space and presents the difference either in square feet of glazing area or, increasingly likely, in percent of glazing area target – the latter seems easier to usefully understand.

Third, it comments selectively by suggestion, indication, and definition about daylighting aspects of importance as designers’ opinions warrant.

Fourth, it provides an opportunity to identify persistently darkish spaces or parts of spaces sufficiently distant from a natural light source so as to be considered unlighted, or not penetrated, by a natural light source, e.g., a space considerably back from the daylight from a covered porch, an exceptionally deep interior space.

The structure of the schedule presents as a table of several columns. From the left, let’s see: a give space; its surface area in square feet; 8% of that surface area in square feet; aggregate glazing area of that space in square feet (usually to one decimal); the arithmetic and percentage difference between the 8% and the aggregate glazing column; and comments as appropriate. Comments can include, among others, modulate, dark, code compliant (for sleeping areas), etc.

Home lighting experts put definable limits on the extent of useful daylighting that can penetrate a space. These limits can be found in, for example, Lighting Design Basics by Mark Karlen and James Benya, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2004, p.34 and Interior Lighting For Designers 4th Edition by Gary Gordon, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1957, p.53ff. While this daylight penetration aspect of daylighting analysis can be judgmental, consideration of related adjustment to natural illumination is, in the author’s opinion, well worth the effort as a pre-emptive design alert to convenience and safety.

The home Daylighting Design Schedule presents several bases of or inputs to home design analysis – 16 in all.

1. Of itself for natural light, in the house’s compass orientation and, possibly, its adjustment and in personal assessment of infiltration and adequacy in daylighted spaces.

2. Ventilation as a quality control cross-check in cross-venting of sleeping areas and longer occupied rooms, plus sizing and indicative siting of both supplies and returns.

3. UV intrusion indicator of where it may be determined as less welcome and its power diminished.

4. Natural heat-build indicator for HVAC professional attention and various design means to lessen.

5. Daylight glare definition especially in areas, such as stairways, where glare threatens safety.

6. Qualification for code-compliance of aggregate glazing area to space surface area in sleeping areas, notably more problematic in such spaces within story-and-a-half structures at L2.

7. Suggestive guide to artificial lighting throughout, particularly ambient lighting and lighting controls.

8. Definitive cross-check on window and door size and site in elevations, plan view(s), and window schedule (and, possibly, door schedule).

9. Excellent perspective on the consequences of exterior design on interior functionality, occasionally leading to design changes ranging from marginal to major.

10. Guide to increased layering in low-daylight spaces.

11. Guide to continuous service rating in no- and very low-daylight spaces.

12. Guide to altering fenestration dimensions.

13. Guide to altering fenestration siting.

14. Motivation in single-storied deep spaces with exterior covers to penetrate those covers with niches in the roof, sunscreen, skylight, clerestory, etc.

15. Motivation in single-storied deep spaces with or without exterior covers to add clerestories and light wells by way of dormers and other fenestration design modifications.

16. Motivation, particularly in story-and-a-half designs, to necessarily add dormers, skylights, skylight tubes, clerestories, light wells, and other fenestration design modifications.

Comment: Note, please, that latter-day fixing of major mistakes to attain convenient and safe sizing and siting of windows, exterior door composition, luminaires, and light-reflecting and -absorbing features can be a remediation expense and physical inconvenience bigtime.

Bathroom lighting is an great way to give your bathroom a whole new look and feel.

Proper lighting is important in a bathroom since this room serves as a retreat and a place to relax and unwind. A bathroom must have a complete and layered lighting scheme in order to create the desired effect.

Since most bathrooms are small enough that only a single fixture may be required to supply an ample amount of light. A ceiling-mounted fixture can be quite useful. There are many beautiful flush and semi-flush mounts that are available on the market that could be used to create the right lighting design in any bathroom. Today’s ceiling lighting can be quite attractive, especially if you look beyond the bathroom for ideas. There are many lighting fixtures that weren’t necessarily made for the bathroom that could be seen as possibilities for your bathroom remodel.

For the best lighting effect, you should apply your lighting in various layers. These layers of lighting include ambient, task, and accent lighting.

Task lighting is the lighting necessary to carry out specific activities in the home. Generally, task lighting is higher in intensity than other types of lighting

Ambient lighting is a term used to describe the total amount of light that is present in a space. We can say that a room has high or low levels of ambient lighting. Placing surface mounted fixtures at the ceiling can create ambient lighting. Accent lighting is any type of lighting that brings attention to itself or to an object.

You can certainly feel free to have more than one type of lighting for your bathroom, particularly if you have a larger bathroom, you can mix a few wall sconces with a ceiling fixture or group of pendant lights, if you have a high enough ceiling. Depending on your bathroom space you can become creative with your bathroom lighting design. If a bathroom vanity works well in your bathroom, don’t be afraid to embellish it by adding a sconce on either side. A small ceiling fixture, combined with your vanity or bar can create a more contemporary feel to your bathroom. You can customize your bathroom lighting to create your own unique lighting design.

The type of lighting you select for your bathroom is critical to your bathroom design. You should consider ceiling, vanity and recessed, accent (lighting from below counters, inside showers, etc.) and decorative as in sconces. If you are planning on vanity lighting the lighting should be provided on both sides of the vanity mirror.

Do you want to create a brighter bathroom? Do you plan to have built in any features that would need to be accented? Whether you are creating a new bathroom or remodeling your existing one, you will find that lighting design is an important consideration in bathroom design.

When it comes to brightening up a drab existing bathroom you will find that there are lots of things you can do with the existing wiring. Give careful consideration to planning out the lighting if you’re fitting a brand-new bathroom. If the new tiles have been installed over the wiring, for example, it will be very hard to change

The decision on selecting bathroom fixtures for your bathroom lighting will be influenced by the size and zones in your bathroom. A bathroom lighting fixture can be for ambient or general lighting, task lighting for specific purposes or subdued lighting for relaxation.

With the just the right amount of planning and selection of the proper bathroom lighting you can transform your ordinary bathroom into something really stunning.

In this type of design, the fixtures are not readily seen by the eye, but the light is cast such that the room gains a whole new artistic perspective. Fittings for this type of lighting use hidden wiring and need a lot of thinking through prior to its installation. It is quite normal to find the fixtures installed inside the ceiling but variants of this design exist including on rare occasions finding recessed lighting carved into walls. The radiance of recessed lighting results from wide angled reflections meant either to provide a spotlight or a floodlight phenomenon.

With the subtle blur of the recessed lighting’s focus there is a much more enhanced aesthetic quality given to the room than would be afforded by normal lighting designs. A chic look is given to the room once the fittings have been made creating quite a tranquil atmosphere thus communicating this mood to the room’s occupants. Due to the virtue of the light being emitted from a can, recession lighting is also referred to as pot or can light.

Though it has begun to gain popularity recently, this type of design has been in circulation for the past half century. Its versatility wins it a lot of favor with designers since it accentuates other properties of design in the room as well as providing the essential lighting. The lighting may as well bring attention to the main object of attraction in the house, for example a sculpture, thus the occupants are able to give this piece its deserved appreciation.

Recessed lighting designs are used in a range of our daily lives design including religious places, homes and business places. Churches have in recent times tended to substitute candles along their walls for this type of lighting. Used also to provide the general lighting, these religious structures do gain quite an artistic quality with the installations. At the house, the fittings can be made in quite a number of rooms where it serves both functionally as well as provides an artistic mood. The kitchen for example experiences quite a nice atmosphere in which to work in, making the occupants feel a rare tranquility.

The lights can be fitted with adjustable controls such that the occupants can have an intensity of their preference. A bright light may for example not fit well to the atmosphere of the sleeping area thus a lower intensity may be used here. This type of lighting on your front door can also give the home quite a remarkably welcoming look. Recessed lighting above the working area does quite a good job of removing a lot of focus on the workspace while avoiding the creation of shadows.

Depending on the type of design you adopt, recessed lighting can be used to high light different moods. You may use an angled design for focus on a portion of the room intended on your design. This might auger well if you intend to make an art piece in the room a center of the occupants’ attention.

There are tons of different types of Modern Floor Lamps out there, however 3 have been picked here today that will basically fit in with just about any style of decorating that you can think of. And after reading this article you will be able to walk away knowing that you have 3 very good style floor lamps to choose from for all your lighting needs.

1. The Shaded Lamp:

This is a pretty standard lamp. However, the main difference is that it has a shade that has modern lines or a more contemporary shape. The shade can be plain, usually white, or a fancier colored or patterned one. Usually the plain white shade will come with the lamp, where you can then buy upgraded shades for it at another time.

2. The Modern Arc Lamp:

This lamp has a long massive curve in it that allows it to be put into a corner, and still shed light where needed, just by adjusting the flexible curve in the neck.

This is a popular floor lamp for corners, where you might have a chair or couch where you would read.

3. The Halogen Floor Lamp:

This lamp either comes with 1 or 2 different lamps coming from it for directional lighting. The single bulb lamp usually just points straight up with something that would look like an upside down shade.

The dual bulb style has 2 necks on it, each pointing in a different direction, perfect for a corner where either 2 couches meet, or 2 chairs, etc.

Either of these types of halogen lamps will have a dimmer switch on them, so that you can adjust the brightness of the lamp, it is one of the great things about these types of floor lamps.

Now that you have read this article you have 3 different kinds of Modern Floor Lamps to choose from, each with different looks, and different functions. All you really have to decide is which one is best suited for your own personal style, and that will blend in well or be just the right accent to your current design style.

Time and money spent remodeling your kitchen causes one to want to do it “right.” Your kitchen cabinets and decor is not only complimented but is completed with a proper lighting plan. Many lighting supply stores have folks on staff who are trained to help you design just such a plan.

Lighting for your kitchen should create different dimensions to your kitchen. To achieve that you should incorporate at least 3 of the following types of lighting. Each way will have not only a different feel but will provide a unique function. And by adding dimmer switches to any of the following you can create even more dimensions to your kitchen.

Recessed Lighting

There are a couple of ways that you can use recessed lighting. The first is to use it as a wash of light over the fronts of your cabinets as well as your work areas. A spot would give you a narrower beam of light that could create shadows either wanted or not wanted. A flood light would give you more of a wash of light.

The second function of recessed lighting in a kitchen is to illuminate the whole room. If you have a large kitchen you might decide to use some additional recessed lighting around an eating cove or along walk way areas that might appear dark otherwise.

Track Lighting

Track lighting can be used for the same functions of the recessed lighting. It can either provide light above counters and cabinets so that you can see in the cabinets. Or it can light up dead spaces. Track lighting generally comes down a little from the ceiling. The amount of distance is dependent on how high your ceiling is.

There are basically two styles of track lighting. One that is a straight bar that can either be installed flush with your ceiling or lowered a bit. The second is more of a funky artsy style that is often curvy. They can take LED light bulbs or more often Halogen light bulbs.

Some use track lighting for the design element. Others might use track lighting for the mere fact that you don’t have any space above your kitchen to put a recessed can. There are remodel cans that can be installed from below if you can not get to the crawl space above your kitchen. But when you don’t have that space is the time someone might opt for track lighting.

Under Counter

Under counter lighting is really more important than most think. The main function is to light up your work area on your counters. It also lights up the area under your counter where recessed or track lighting will not reach.

When under counter lighting is installed it should be installed under all of your cabinets. They either come in the form of low voltage puck lights or string of fixtures that hold a long tube style light bulb.

Pendant Lights

Often you will see pendant lights in groups of three. Always try and install an odd number. Occasionally, two will suffice but one or three is much better. Today pendants enhance the décor or feel of your room. Manufacturers offer many different styles of pendant lights. Those styles enhance your décor whether you are decorating your home in a modern style, traditional style or any other fancy you have.

Pendants are used above kitchen islands or bars. Here, you will want to hang your pendant at 72″ from the floor. This will allow anyone standing on either side of the island or bar to have a conversation without having the pendant in the middle of their eye sight line. And it won’t be so high that you are blinded by the light bulb if you happen to look up.

Over Table Lighting

Larger pendants and chandeliers are common place in a kitchen over an eating area. These provide an anchor above your table and complete the space whether it is portioned off by a wall or is a part of another room.

You will want to hang a chandelier or pendent in the center of where your table will be. Now, if you live in an older home like mine the electricity doesn’t always come out of the ceiling in the right place. What we’ve done is to place a hook above the center of our table. We insured the cord of the chandelier was long enough to drape from the power to our hook and fall to right length.

Over an eating table you will want to hang your fixture at 60″ from the floor. For the same reasons I’ve noted above with pendant lights, you will want to be able to converse with someone across the table but not be blinded by the light bulbs when you look up into the fixture.

Accent Lighting

Kitchens today are built much larger than they use to be. As a result you have a lot more space to play with. Accent Lighting is not only decorative but can provide function as well. We use ours in the event someone needs to visit the refrigerator or get a glass of water in the middle of the night but doesn’t want to completely wake up in the process.

Small portable lamps can be placed on counters where there are no upper cabinets. You might also be able to find one small enough to go under the upper cabinets. These will most always have a clip on shade. Meaning, it’s a shade that fastens to your light bulb and isn’t connected to the body of the lamp.

Islands are great places for table or buffet lamps. On the corner of an eating bar or an out of the way place can add some style and whimsy to your kitchen. And if you don’t happen to have pendants above your island, a portable lamp can provide some height to the area.

Some kitchens are built with seating areas connected. Here you will most definitely want to either use floor lamps or table lamps if you have enough space for a side table next to your reading chair.

Remember that you want your kitchen lighting design to be decorative AND functional. Using a professional is always a big help but with a little research and testing the light, you can create the right mood for your own kitchen.

It is a beautiful evening and you are relaxing on your patio, enjoying the cool summer air. The flowers are blooming, the lawn is green and lush, everything is perfect, if only you could see! We spend so much time and money on our backyards, decks and patios, and then the sun goes down and we must abandon these beautiful oases. However, it does not have to be that way if you have outdoor lighting.

There are so many choices on the market these days for outdoor lighting that you can find something for every budget and something to fit into any outdoor design. Whether you are looking to brightly light a patio or deck, or simply add some atmospheric lighting in your garden, there are endless options with outdoor lighting.

What Are My Choices?

There are a few different options when it comes to lighting your backyard environment. The first thing that you need to decide is what your primary goal is with the lights. What do you want to achieve? Do you want a subtle effect or bright lights that will extend your living area? Do you want to display plants or trees? Alternatively, do you simply want to light up your walkway?

Once you decide, what you want to achieve you can examine the options that are available. The most common types of outdoor lights are:

1) Low voltage

2) Solar

There are more options, however these two are generally the most common and each option has its advantages and disadvantages.

Solar Lighting

Solar lights have become quite popular in recent years, and this is primarily because they are relatively inexpensive. These lights are also very easy to install and use, and they do not require a professional installation.

Each light works by having a solar panel on top of the light fixture. The sun light charges the solar panels during the day, and when the sun goes down, the solar cells, which should be fully charged illuminate the lights.

The obvious disadvantages to this type of light are that they do not stay brightly lit for long. There is only a limited time that the light will shine, until the solar cells run out of charge and the light fades out. The other disadvantage to a solar light is that the light is not very bright. If you are relying on solar lights to illuminate a pathway in your garden, it will not do a very good job. The light that it puts out is simply not bright enough for illumination.

However, solar lights are very useful if you are simply looking for a bit of ambience. These lights are very good if you want to provide some subtle atmospheric lighting in your garden or around a pond or water feature. Because you do not have to worry about any electrical wiring, you do not have a safety hazard if you want to use this type of light around a water feature in your garden.

Low Voltage Lighting

Low voltage lighting is the way to go if you are looking to cast a little bit more light on the situation. If you choose low voltage, you will have many more options than with solar lights however the lights are likely to cost you more.

Low voltage lights are an excellent choice if you are looking to illuminate a pathway or walkway in your yard or garden. These lights will provide enough light so that you will be able to see your way, however it will not be over lit either.

The downside to low voltage lights are that you will likely need to have them professionally installed. Depending on the type that you choose and the set up that you require, you may be able to do it yourself.

What Kinds Of Lights Can I Get?

When you start shopping for outdoor light fixtures, you may become overwhelmed. There are more and more types of lights out on the market every day, so there is definitely something for everyone.

A popular type of light is the natural looking one. This type of light is made to look like a rock so that it blends into the landscape. These types of lights are available in different sizes and shapes. In addition, you can even get them in a spotlight as well, if you want o showcase a tree, statue or even your home.

Another popular type of lighting is deck lights. These lights are small and are built directly into your deck. You can have them placed low on the bottom of benches or built into stair to provide a safe illumination at night.

Decisions, Decisions.

Whatever type of lighting you choose to go with for your backyard or garden, the options are endless. With the proper lighting, you will be able to expand your living space in the evening hours, for even more enjoyment. And do not forget, that by lighting a garden or walkway you will be adding a very valuable safety feature as well.

Your kitchen, more than any other room in your home, needs a good well thought out lighting plan. Today’s kitchens have many more functions than just cooking a meal. For many families it is the most frequently used room in the house. Besides the obvious preparation of meals, kitchens today are also a place for the kids to do homework, parents to pay the bills, reading, eating and watching TV. For this reason it is important that the light not only be adequate but flexible.

The first place to start in any room when devising a lighting plan is to address general lighting. This is the light that will be used most of the time. In the case of a very small kitchen, one light in the center of the room will provide the general light. With most of today’s kitchens being larger, a single light fixture in the center of the room probably won’t satisfy your lighting needs. The most common solution is recessed lighting. Depending on what part of the country you are in they may be called high hats or pot lights or can lights. All these terms mean the same thing. Recessed lighting is a good way to provide general lighting in a kitchen in a neat and clean way.

The placement of the lights is very important. When designing a layout for the general lighting in a kitchen, we want to take into account the areas where tasks will be done. This includes counters, islands and tables. In most cases, by designing the light to illuminate these areas, the rest of the room gets a good spread of general light as well. Try to have the recessed lights fall out on the ceiling so that they are directly above the outside edge of the cabinets. The key here is getting the lights close enough to the work area so that you don’t create a shadow with your body. Putting the lights to far away from the counters is a sure formula for shadows. Don’t overlook any nooks that may be dark.

Islands can provide a great outlet for adding a decorative fixture or fixtures to the room. There are a multitude of pendants to choose from that can really enhance the room. I find it is probably one of the most commented on aspects of a kitchen lighting plan when the homeowner sees the finished product. Simply installing 2 or 3 pendants in line over an island can be quite stunning.

The next step is the task lighting. In a kitchen this is the light directly over the counters, stove and sink. Having one or two small recessed lights on a separate switch over the sink is both attractive and useful. The stove these days is almost always lit from a fan hood or microwave but if it is not it should be addressed. The way the counters are illuminated is with under cabinet lighting. This can be in the form of simple fluorescent fixtures on an economical level. A very nice effect is to use low voltage linear track. These can be dimmed and provide very good light to the counters. There are also xenon fixtures and halogen fixtures. If you can try and stay with xenon as they burn cooler and have a longer bulb life than halogen.

After you have your general lighting and task lighting covered the last thing to consider is any accent lighting. On some kitchens where there is a space above the cabinets, lighting on top of the cabinets can look spectacular. Tray ceilings with crown molding can also benefit greatly from this type of lighting. Using either a low voltage type track or rope light, you can add that extra touch that makes your kitchen unique. For more lighting tips and lighting design help visit the links below.
